El Puerto de Algeciras se proclamó ayer ganador de la 12ª edición del Premio ESPO 2020. La Comisaria Europea de Transportes, Adina Valean, desveló el veredicto del jurado en el transcurso de una ceremonia virtual organizada por la Organización Europea de Puertos (ESPO). La institución europea reconoce con este galardón el papel de la Autoridad Portuaria Bahía de Algeciras (APBA) en el fomento de la integración de las empresas innovadoras y emprendedores locales en el ámbito portuario.
En su intervención, Adina Valean destacó el papel de los puertos de la Unión Europea para mantener la cadena logística durante los peores meses de la pandemia del Covid-19. Asimismo la comisaria instó a los puertos a seguir trabajando en beneficio del desarrollo sostenible.
En la candidatura ganadora, la APBA ha presentado su programa de gestión y cultura de la innovación denominado “Travesía de la Innovación”. Bajo este paraguas la institución portuaria organiza numerosas actividades dirigidas a estudiantes de Universidad, trabajadores del ámbito portuario, emprendedores, start-ups y pymes tecnológicas con la organización de concursos para premiar ideas innovadoras o permitir a las compañías probar sus soluciones en el entorno del Puerto Bahía de Algeciras, en el marco del programa “Algeciras Port Living Lab”.
Tras conocer la decisión del jurado de la mano de la Comisaria de Transportes, el presidente de la Autoridad Portuaria, Gerardo Landaluce, mostró su agradecimiento a ESPO, al resto de puertos participantes y, especialmente, al Área de Desarrollo Tecnológico de la APBA y a la Oficina Técnica de Innovación gestionada por la firma de ingeniería y consultoría IDOM, por el trabajo realizado en los últimos años para consolidar la cultura de la innovación en el Puerto Bahía de Algeciras. “Este premio nos demuestra que estamos en el camino correcto y nos inspira a trabajar aún más para impulsar la integración social a través de la innovación”.
Junto al Puerto de Algeciras, el proyecto Puertos 4.0 del Organismo Público Puertos del Estado y las propuestas presentadas por los puertos de Ámsterdam (Holanda) y Lisboa (Portugal) fueron las candidaturas finalistas seleccionadas por el jurado en la 12º edición de este galardón para la Integración Social de los Puertos, al que también optaban los puertos de Oulu (Finlandia), Tesalónica (Grecia) y Róterdam (Holanda).

The Port of Algeciras wins the 12th edition of the ESPO Award 2020 for its culture and innovation management program
The Port of Algeciras became winner of the 12th edition of the ESPO Award 2020. The European Transport Commissioner, Adina Valean, revealed the jury’s verdict during a virtual ceremony held by ESPO. With this award, the European institution acknowledges the role of APBA concerning the promotion of integration of innovative companies and local entrepreneurs in the port industry.
Adina Valean emphasized the importance of the ports of the European Union in keeping a balanced logistic chain during the hardest months of the Covid-19 pandemic. The Commissioner also urged ports to continue working in order to achieve sustainable development. This prize acknowledges the role of European ports as driving forces for innovation and social integration. Specifically, this year’s edition sought «to encourage local entrepreneurs and companies to take part in the port ecosystem with the goal to boost relations between ports and their environment».
As the winner of this award, APBA introduced their «Innovation Journey«, that is, their culture and innovation management program. Through this programme, the port institution runs multiple activities for university students, port employees, entrepreneurs, start-ups and technology SMEs. It realises contests and prizes for innovating ideas, and it provides companies with port facilities to test their proposed solutions, within the framework of the initiative
«Algeciras Port Living Lab».
The Chairman of APBA, Gerardo Landaluce, thanked ESPO, the representatives of the other ports participating and specially, APBA’s Technological Development Department and the Technical Innovation Office managed by IDOM.

The project «Ports 4.0» by Puertos del Estado (Spanish body within the Ministry of Transport), and the proposals presented by the ports of Amsterdam and Lisbon were selected finalists by the jury in this 12th edition of the ESPO Award 2020 for the Social Integration of the Ports. The ports of Oulu (Finland), Thessaloniki (Greece) and Rotterdam (Netherlands) participated as well, among others.
