The Algeciras Port Authority had the chance to participate in a panel discussion about the “Real Value of Smart Data” at the Smart Digital Ports of the Future (SDP19) hosted by Port Technology in Rotterdam.
The panel session brought together the Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), Navis, Miros-Group, Algeciras Port Authority and it was moderated by Leticia Astudillo from Drewry Associates. One of the big issues to discuss was: How to use data to make decisions, implement learnings from digitalization and incorporate innovation into business operations.
During the two days event, there were consistent themes throughout, the biggest perhaps the need for greater visibility and collaboration, in particular with data, and the drive towards standardization, and there were also fascinating insights on artificial intelligence, the end-to-end supply chain and emerging transportation technologies.
In such context, it is important to highlight that stakeholders to not make their own data standards but rather join an alliance that already had them, as this was the quickest way to ensure efficiency and global collaboration.
There were also nice discussions around blockchain which is recommended for the validation of transactions and the relay of data. The conversation around blockchain was, as the panel pointed out, closely aligned to standards, and that the maritime industry will only achieve true efficiency and transparency once it has agreed on how to share its data.
Finally, we would like to remark (1) the future of PCS which are blossoming as trusted third parties for B2B, B2G, G2G data sharing and business process automation and (2) the changing business environment for shippers and cargo owners which expectations urge ports to be more proactive.
