The Port of Rotterdam inaugurated at the end of 2016 the first laboratory of additive manufacturing and 3D printing of metal parts focused on the port industry (3D FieldLab). The success obtained in the development of the pilot project during 2015 led to the construction of this FieldLab, which will be located in the Innovation Dock of the Port of Rotterdam.
This initiative aims to carry out research and development projects in collaboration with other industrial partners to ensure the viability of WAAM (Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing) technology and that, in the future, it can be printed on demand without the need to have of stock
However, there are already two systems available with WAAM technology that can produce propellers for ships or welds like lifting hooks.
